Christianity and Homosexuality

These two topics have recently seemed to be mutually-exclusive. Members of the religious right say that one cannot be a good Christian and be homosexual while some members of the gay community say one cannot be an honest homosexual and Christian. Both of these statements are false and show a good deal of ignorance and fear on both sides of the issue, please read on.

Homosexuality is not unique in its status as an issue some people use to justify their hatred and/or repression of others. Throughout the history of this country, the world, and the church there have been other issues that were divisive in nature: anti-Sematism, slavery, and female clergy to name a few.

John 7:1 states " After this Jesus went about in Galilee, he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. This passage has been used to "prove" that Jews are evil and plotted the murder of Christ, for which they must be punished. Much of the anti-Semitism we have observed in the past and today has been "justified" in the minds of the hate mongers with this and similar Biblical passages.

As we know, slavery was wide spread in the various stories in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament.  Many members of the US Congress used Biblical passages in their debates in the 1830s, 40s, and 50s to justify the continued legality of slavery. Today, we would reject such usage of the Bible, because we understand more of God's word. The same applies to our GLBT brothers and sisters and the topic of homosexuality.

Most recently, members of the religious right have used scripture to prevent women from serving in the church.  1 Cor.. 34-35 "As in all churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate as the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church." Again, we see the mis-application of Biblical verses to oppress a particular group of people.

Throughout this website, I will address each of the passages used by the religious "right" to condemn homosexuality and show the inaccuracies in these statements and why the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. I also will talk about salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Each topic is addressed on a separate page.

Above were listed several groups of people that have been historically persecuted and vilified using misquotations from the Bible.  The most tragic aspect of the condemnation against homosexuals is that many times they have no support system to help them through the crises.  Even though Jews have been hunted and hurt throughout history, they had the blessing of having a community, family, or church to which they could turn, who would understand their feelings and provide loving support. The same is true for all other minorities.

Unfortunately, for GLBT some of the people who treat them the worst are their closest friends, family members, and churches upon learning of their sexuality.  This double jeopardy situation leads many GLBT to the brink of despair (and sometimes beyond the brink, to suicide).  This website is intended to show the GLBT brothers and sisters of the world that they are not alone for God does love them. Also these pages will hopefully enlighten the religious community about the harm they are causing their brothers and sisters in Christ when using His Word to condemn, divide, conquer, and hate and that we should all remember the two great commandments as stated by Christ: Mark 12:30-31 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these."
